Take a moment to imagine the experience of being released from prison: after a difficult and isolating experience, the gates have finally opened and the promise of freedom is before you. After a journey of hundreds of miles to get back home, you settle in to have your first real meal in years. Your thoughts travel to pressing human needs: How will you eat after this? Can you get a good-paying job? Can you go to school? Where can you find a place to live? How will you be involved with my children now?

This story is all too common. People with records have been cast away and as a society, we ask people involved with the criminal legal system to rebuild their lives, but then pose impossibly high hurdles to doing so by creating long-lasting barriers known as permanent punishments.
